Basic Life Support (CPR) Courses

The Learning and Assessment Center is now offering Basic Life Support courses (also known as “CPR”). There are a number of course options available for students, faculty and staff at Michigan State University. These courses are offered to individuals and groups. They may be taught at the Learning Assessment Center or on-site. Course descriptions can be found below.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Initial Course

This course is intended for healthcare providers, such as nurses, physicians, paramedics, EMTs, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, medical or nursing students, aides, medical or nursing assistants and other allied health personnel. Successful demonstration of CPR skills and completion of a written exam with a score of at least 84% is required. Participants will receive instruction and skill training in:

  • CPR for adult, child and infant victims
  • Use of a barrier device, bag mask devices, and oxygen to ventilate a victim
  • Use of an AED
  • Management/relief of foreign body obstructions in responsive and unresponsive victims
Course length: Approximately 3.5 hours

Course Fee: $75, includes course manual and materials

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Renewal Course

This renewal course is intended for health care providers to renew their BLS skills. The course reviews CPR for victims of all ages, including ventilation with barrier devices, bag-mask devices, oxygenation, use of the AED, and relief of foreign body airway obstructions in conscious and unconscious victims.

Participants must have a current AHA HCP BLS or Red Cross Professional Rescuer card to attend this course. Participants are expected to review their manual prior to attendance. Successful demonstration of CPR skills and completion of a written exam with a score of at least 84% is required.

Course length: Approximately 2 hours

Course Fee: $35 per person. Course manuals may be purchased for $12.50 additional.

Heartsaver First Aid or Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid Course

These courses are intended for those who have a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements such as public safety officers, teachers, child care providers and those dealing with environmental, chemical and mechanical hazards. This course covers management of illness and injuries during the first minutes until professional help arrives. Content includes General Principles, Medical Emergencies, and Injury Emergencies. Optional topics include CPR, AED, and Environment Emergencies.

Course length: Approximately 4 hours

Course Fee: $75, includes course manual and materials

Heartsaver AED Course

This course is intended for those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements such as security personnel and office assistants. Topics covered include adult/child CPR, use of barrier masks and adult/child AED. Optional topics include infant CPR and choking.

Course length: Approximately 2.5-3 hours

Course Fee: $50, includes course manual and materials

Family and Friends CPR (Child or Adult)

These courses teach how to manage illness and injuries during the first minutes until professional help arrives. Those who have family members or neighbors that may be “at risk”, are frequently in environments where they encounter many members of the community, or those who simply want to learn techniques and information for their own benefit will find this course to be beneficial. Topics include preventing injuries, recognizing and treating basic first aid emergencies, and relief of choking. Both courses cover child and adult content; however emphasize one or the other based on participant needs.

Course length: Approximately 2 hours
